Posted in 1991, Cheesy Songs, Michael Stipe, R.E.M. on August 29, 2007 by pelicancupShiny Happy People was a popular song on the radio, but it was the cheesiest song R.E.M. every wrote. It was reported that Michael Stipe hated the song and did not include it on their 2003 “best of” album. Oh well, it was a hit in 1991, so here it is for all you shiny, happy people out there. Enjoy!
Mr. Big – To Be With You
Posted in #1 Billboard Hot 100, 1991, Glam Rock, Mr. Big on August 27, 2007 by pelicancupIn 1991, Mr. Big released their album, Lean Into It. The last song on the album was this song, To Be With You. It went unnoticed for almost a year until a Nebraska disc jockey put it into his station’s rotation. After a flood of calls, the song picked up steam and eventually hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and stayed there for 3 weeks. Not bad for a single that wasn’t supposed to be “Big” (pun intended). Enjoy!
Queen – Innuendo
Posted in 1991, British Bands, Queen, Rock Legends on August 20, 2007 by pelicancupIn 1991, Queen released Innuendo, and the first song on the album was Innuendo. It’s one of their longest songs at over six and a half minutes long. An earlier version of the video was banned from the U.S. because it included footage from the first Gulf War and they edited out the war footage for the American video. Enjoy!
Violent Femmes – American Music
Posted in 1991, Alternative Rock, College Jam Band, Violent Femmes on August 15, 2007 by pelicancupIn 1991, Violent Femmes released their 5th studio album called Why Do Birds Sing? It was their best album in terms of commercial success. The first song on the album, American Music, rose all the way up to #2 on the Billboard Modern Rock charts. It may have been a big success on the charts, but it’ll never match the appeal of their earlier songs like Add It Up and Blister in the Sun. Enjoy!
