Posted in #1 Billboard Hot 100, 1999 Songs, Pop Rock, Rob Thomas, Santana on September 7, 2008 by pelicancup

Smooth spent twelve weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1999. It was Carlos Santana’s first #1 hit of his career. The song won three Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. It also holds the record for the longest run at #1 on the Billboard Adult Top 40, where it spent 25 weeks at #1. Enjoy!

Matchbox 20 – 3 A.M.

Posted in 1997 Songs, Matchbox 20, Pop Rock on August 6, 2008 by pelicancup

From the late 90’s through the early 2000’s, you couldn’t listen to a radio station for more than 30 minutes before you’d hear a Matchbox 20 song. Specifically, songs like this one, Long Day, Real World, Unwell, etc. were played relentlessly on the radio. So much so, that although they were great songs, I started hating the band just because they were so over-exposed. 3 A.M. though was, and still is, my favorite song from Matchbox 20. It was a #1 hit on the Billboard Adult Top 40 charts, #2 on the Mainstream Rock charts and #3 on the Modern Rock charts. Amazingly, it didn’t even chart on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Enjoy!

Spacehog – In The Meantime

Posted in #1 Mainstream Rock Charts, 1996 Songs, Alternative Rock, British Bands, Pop Rock, Spacehog on July 8, 2008 by pelicancup

Spacehog’s 1996 single, In The Meantime, was their only top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and their only #1 hit on the Mainstream Rock charts. Like yesterday’s video by Giant, Spacehog is now considered a one-hit wonder as well since this was their only charting single on the Hot 100 charts. Enjoy!

Barenaked Ladies – One Week – #1 Billboard Hot 100 Song From 1998

Posted in #1 Billboard Hot 100, #1 Modern Rock Charts, 1998 Songs, Alternative Rock, Barenaked Ladies, College Jam Band, Pop Rock on July 4, 2008 by pelicancup

One Week by the Barenaked Ladies is the song that rocketed the band into superstardom outside of their native Canada. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts for one week in 1998 and was on top of the Billboard Modern Rock charts for four weeks as well. This is their only top ten single on the Hot 100 charts so far. Enjoy!

New Radicals – You Get What You Give

Posted in 1998 Songs, Alternative Rock, New Radicals, Pop Rock on March 26, 2008 by pelicancup

Unlike a lot of one hit wonders who actually release a number of albums, the New Radicals only released one album: 1998’s Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too. The first single released from the album is the reason why they are a one hit wonder. You Get What You Give was a huge hit worldwide. Especially because the celebrity bashing lyrics at the end of the song caused so much controversy:

Health insurance, rip-off lying
FDA, Big bankers buying
Fake computer crashes dining
Cloning while they’re multiplying
Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson,
Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson
You’re all fakes, run to your mansions
Come around, we’ll kick your ass in.

Aside from the controversy, the song is a great song, and it’s too bad they didn’t release any other albums. Enjoy!

The Refreshments – Banditos

Posted in 1996 Songs, Alternative Rock, Pop Rock, The Refreshments on February 10, 2008 by pelicancup

The Refreshments were a great 90’s band, but they’re considered a one hit wonder because of their one big hit, Banditos back in 1996. Their only other claim to fame is they recorded the opening score to the King of the Hill sitcom. Enjoy!

Soul Asylum – Runaway Train

Posted in 1993 Songs, Alternative Rock, Grunge Rock, Pop Rock, Soul Asylum on January 26, 2008 by pelicancup

Runaway Train was Soul Asylum’s biggest hit. It was a top five hit on both the Billboard Hot 100 charts (#5) and the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts (#3) in 1993. My problem with this song was that radio played it so much, that to this day, it’s hard for me to listen to the whole song without getting tired of it. I loved it when it first came out, and it’s still a good song, but it’s a perfect example of radio killing a song. Enjoy!

1996’s One Headlight was The Wallflowers’ first and only #1 hit on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock charts. Amazingly, the song didn’t even chart on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. This song is considered to be one of the best rock songs from the 90’s. Enjoy!
