Firehouse – Love Of A Lifetime

Posted in 1991, Firehouse, Glam Rock, Hair Bands, Heavy Metal, Love Songs, Rock Ballads on October 31, 2007 by pelicancup

Firehouse’s biggest hit was their 1991 glam rock ballad called Love Of A Lifetime. They came on to the scene just as grunge was taking over, so they weren’t able to enjoy their success for very long, but this song is on about every “love songs” CD out there, so they’re not hurting. Enjoy!

Van Halen – Right Now

Posted in 1991, MTV Video Award Winner, Sammy Hagar, Van Halen on October 15, 2007 by pelicancup

In 1991, Van Halen released their album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. Right Now was one of the defining songs for Van Halen during the Sammy Hagar years. It was used in the Crystal Pepsi commercials, and it was played before tipoff at each Chicago Bulls basketball game during their heyday in the early 90’s.

This music video won three awards at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, including the award for Video of the Year. Sadly, producer Carolyn Beug was killed on September 11, 2001 as a passenger on American Airlines Flight 11 en route to Los Angeles from Boston.

Smashing Pumpkins – Rhinocerus

Posted in 1991, Alternative Rock, Grunge Rock, Smashing Pumpkins on October 11, 2007 by pelicancup

Rhinocerus is on the Smashing Pumpkins debut album called Gish. It’s definitely different from a lot of their other music. I had never heard this song or seen the video until today. It’s strange seeing Billy Corgan with so much hair. Enjoy!

U2 – The Fly

Posted in #1 Modern Rock Charts, 1991, Electronica, U2 on October 10, 2007 by pelicancup

The Fly was the first single released from U2’s 1991 Achtung Baby album. The Fly refers to Bono’s persona on the Zoo TV Tour in which he wore all black leather and large wrap around sunglasses. It went to #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock charts and it was an introduction to the sonic and electronic experimentation that would dominate U2’s 1990’s work. Enjoy!

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – Learning To Fly

Posted in #1 Mainstream Rock Charts, 1991, Classic Rock, Country Rock, Tom Petty on October 9, 2007 by pelicancup

Learning to Fly was a huge hit for Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers in 1991. It spent six weeks atop the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts. While many people argue that the song was written about the feeling of smoking marijuana, Petty has confirmed many times in interviews that the song is actually about flying an airplane. He wrote the song after watching an interview with a pilot who said that it’s not hard to learn to fly, but coming down is the challenging part. Enjoy!

Scorpions – Wind of Change

Posted in 1991, Heavy Metal, Rock Ballads, Scorpions on October 3, 2007 by pelicancup

Wind of Change was a power ballad by the German rock band the Scorpions. It peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1991. The song refers to the changes happening in Eastern Europe during the early 90’s like the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War. It’s one of my favorite rock ballads of the 90’s. Enjoy!
