The Offspring – Gone Away

Posted in #1 Mainstream Rock Charts, 1997 Songs, Hard Rock, The Offspring on September 8, 2008 by pelicancup

Gone Away is my favorite song by The Offspring. In 1997, it became their first #1 hit on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts. It also peaked at #4 on the Modern Rock charts. The song is about the grieving process after the death of someone you love, and countless fans have expressed gratitude to the band for helping them get through a tough time by listening to the song. Enjoy!

Matchbox 20 – 3 A.M.

Posted in 1997 Songs, Matchbox 20, Pop Rock on August 6, 2008 by pelicancup

From the late 90’s through the early 2000’s, you couldn’t listen to a radio station for more than 30 minutes before you’d hear a Matchbox 20 song. Specifically, songs like this one, Long Day, Real World, Unwell, etc. were played relentlessly on the radio. So much so, that although they were great songs, I started hating the band just because they were so over-exposed. 3 A.M. though was, and still is, my favorite song from Matchbox 20. It was a #1 hit on the Billboard Adult Top 40 charts, #2 on the Mainstream Rock charts and #3 on the Modern Rock charts. Amazingly, it didn’t even chart on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Enjoy!

Motley Crue – Afraid

Posted in 1997 Songs, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Motley Crue on July 31, 2008 by pelicancup

Afraid was the first single Motley Crue released from their 1997 album Generation Swine, which was the band’s first studio album with Vince Neil back as the lead singer. Afraid peaked at #10 on the Mainstream Rock charts, but quickly faded away. The album didn’t live up to the hype that the band had hoped, and the mid-to-late 90’s were a tough time for bands like the Crue with Rap and R&B artists dominating MTV. Enjoy!

U2’s 1997 hit single Discothèque was their last top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It also went to #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock charts. This was the lead single to their ’97 Pop album. In the video, they performed in a room filled with mirrors and different colored disco lights and at the end they dressed up in Village People costumes. Enjoy!

It spent 16 weeks atop the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts, and is the band’s biggest hit. They have a new album called Days of the New IV that is supposed to be released sometime this year, and they’re also rumored to be going out on tour with the original lineup. Enjoy!
