Tesla – Signs

Posted in 1990 on December 29, 2006 by pelicancup

In 1990, Tesla released a live all-acoustic album entitled, Five Man Acoustical Jam. At the time, there weren’t a lot of hard rock bands playing acoustic sets, and this video was a milestone. It wasn’t long after this video that you started seeing a lot of other bands performing acoustic sets and MTV Unplugged was launched. Enjoy the video!

Editor’s Note 3/17/07: Unfortunately, YouTube has been cracking down on music videos uploaded to their site. The official video for Signs is no longer available, but I found this one of the band performing live in New York. It’s a great version of the song live…

The Soup Dragons – I’m Free

Posted in 1990, Soup Dragons on December 28, 2006 by pelicancup

1990 was a very diverse year in music. I loved all types of music, and the Soup Dragons CD, Lovegod, was one of my favorites. I was a sophomore in college when this CD was released, and we played this song, I’m Free, many, many late nights after coming in from partying all night. It’s one of those songs that needs to be played very loud and you need to be really drunk to really enjoy the song. Enjoy the video!

Jane’s Addiction – Been Caught Stealing

Posted in 1990, Jane's Addiction on December 27, 2006 by pelicancup

This is one of the best songs that Jane’s Addiction ever recorded. The video is great. I just watched the movie, Gone in 60 Seconds with Nicholas Cage and Angelina Jolie, and this song is featured in the movie. It spent four weeks at the #1 position on the U.S. charts. Enjoy the video!

In 1989, The Cure released their album, Disintegration. They released this song, Pictures of You, as a single in January, 1990. This song has been burned into everyone’s memory because of the HP commercials a few years back that used this song. It’s a great song, and this is the full version of the video. Enjoy the video!

Damn Yankees – High Enough

Posted in 1990 on December 20, 2006 by pelicancup

In 1989, Tommy Shaw from Styx, Ted Nugent, Jack Blades from Night Ranger and Michael Cartellone, who joined Lynyrd Skynyrd as their drummer in 1999 and is still with them, formed the supergroup Damn Yankees. This song, High Enough went to #1 in the U.S. Ironically, with all the success Ted Nugent has had, it was his first #1 hit. Enjoy the video!

INXS – Suicide Blonde

Posted in 1990, INXS on December 19, 2006 by pelicancup

In 1990, INXS released their 7th album, X, and this song, Suicide Blonde, was the first single off the album. It reached the top 10 in the U.S. The song was actually written about Michael Hutchense’s girlfriend at the time, Kylie Minogue. She was required to dye her hair platinum blonde for a role in the movie, The Delinquents, and was quoted by Hutchence in an interview in ’89 as saying “I’m going suicide blonde today”. Enjoy the video!

Faith No More – Epic

Posted in 1990, Faith No More on December 18, 2006 by pelicancup

In June, 1989, Faith No More released their 3rd album, The Real Thing. In 1990, they released this song, Epic and it climbed all the way up to #9 in U.S. This video was nominated for a MTV Video Music Award for Best Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Video. The award actually went to Aerosmith for their video, Janie’s Got a Gun, but the nomination solidified the band as one of the top Heavy Metal bands of the early 90’s. Enjoy the video!

Poison – Unskinny Bop

Posted in 1990, Poison on December 17, 2006 by pelicancup

While the new grunge rock coming out of Seattle was just getting started, the rest of the country was still right in the middle of the Glam Rock invasion. In 1990, Poison released their third album, Flesh & Blood, which contained these three gold singles: Ride the Wind, Something to Believe In and this song, Unskinny Bop. This video was classic Poison. 1990 was a great year for the band, and they, like so many other 80’s hair bands, had no idea that the ride they were on was about to be completely over in a few short years. Enjoy the video!

Mother Love Bone – Chloe Dancer – Crown of Thorns

Posted in 1990, Eddie Vedder, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam on December 16, 2006 by pelicancup

This video isn’t actually a video by Mother Love Bone, but rather by Pearl Jam. I originally found a video for the song by MLB, but it’s since been taken down from YouTube, and I can’t find another one anywhere. Pearl Jam does a great job on the song though.

This song is off Mother Love Bone’s only full-length album, Apple, which was originally released posthumously in 1990 following the death of frontman Andrew Wood. This is a great song, and MLB would have been a great band had Andrew been able to kick his drug habit. As it is, it’s the only album they ever released. It’s a great one though. This song was also featured in the 1992 movie Singles starring Bridget Fonda, Matt Dillon and Kyra Sedgwick.

Two of the remaining members of Mother Love Bone, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament, went on to form the Andrew Wood tribute band Temple of the Dog with Chris Cornell of Soundgarden fame. Later, Stone and Jeff formed Pearl Jam and the rest is rock n’ roll history.

Enjoy the video!

Motley Crue – Kickstart My Heart

Posted in 1990, Motley Crue on December 13, 2006 by pelicancup

1990 was a great year for Motley Crue. They released their album, Dr. Feelgood, in September, 1989 and this song, Kickstart My Heart hit the Top 40 in January, 1990. Dr. Feelgood was the Crue’s most successful album in terms of popularity and the charts. This video didn’t win, but was nominated for the Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Video at the MTV Video Music Awards in September, 1990. This was really the last good Motley Crue album. They released a greatest hits album a couple of years later, but drugs, in-fighting within the band and the new grunge sound coming out of Seattle, really contributed to the bands demise during the early to mid-nineties.

But, they have rebounded and put on a world tour this year. They’re still one of my favorite bands of all-time. Enjoy the video!
