RATT – Nobody Rides For Free

Posted in 1991, Glam Rock, Hair Bands, Hard Rock, RATT on December 10, 2008 by pelicancup

Like Poison, the grunge rock movement of the early 90’s all but exterminated RATT. In 1991, they contributed this song, Nobody Rides For Free, to the soundtrack for the action flick Point Break starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. Unfortunately, the video and song didn’t receive much airplay on MTV or the radio due to the popularity of grunge rock.

This was RATT’s first single released without the late Robbin Crosby on guitar. Robbin had been kicked out of the band due to his drug abuse problems. They didn’t release another single until 1997 when they released the song Hold Tight from their compilation album Collage. Enjoy!

Poison – 7 Days Over You (Live)

Posted in 1993 Songs, Arena Rock, Hair Bands, Hard Rock, Poison on December 9, 2008 by pelicancup

Poison just released a new DVD in August called Seven Days Live. It’s footage of a 1993 Poison concert from London’s Hammersmith Apollo on April, 23, 1993. It’s a rare look at Poison on their Native Tongue tour, which featured Richie Kotzen on guitar. While the show featured a lot of Poison’s hits from the 80’s, it also featured a lot of songs from the Native Tongue album. One of those songs was this one, 7 Days Over You.

It’s really a shame that Poison’s fan base had abandoned them for grunge bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana during this time frame because musically, Native Tongue is one of Poison’s best albums. The songs are much more complex and Kotzen’s influence on guitar is unmistakable. He brought an element of blues mixed with heavy metal riffs that meshed really well with Bret’s vocals. It’s a shame Kotzen was kicked out of the band because they might still be recording new material with him. (But, you can’t blame them for kicking him out. He did sleep with Rikki Rockett’s fiance…)

Don’t get me wrong, I like Poison with C.C., but it’s no secret they were limited musically with C.C. on guitar. That’s why this DVD release is so cool because the majority of Poison fans never even listened to Native Tongue. Well, here’s your chance. Enjoy!

Rage Against The Machine – Bulls On Parade

Posted in 1996 Songs, Alternative Rock, Rage Against The Machine on December 4, 2008 by pelicancup

Bulls on Parade is one of Rage Against The Machine’s most recognized songs. It’s a track from their 1996 album Evil Empire. The song has an original guitar solo that sounds more like a turntable than a guitar. Bulls on Parade charted on the Billboard Hot 100 (#62), Mainstream Rock (#36) and the Modern Rock charts (#11). Enjoy!

Alice in Chains – Would?

Posted in 1992 Songs, Alice in Chains, Alternative Rock, Grunge Rock, Hard Rock on December 3, 2008 by pelicancup

Would? was a 1992 single by Alice in Chains. It was on their ’92 album Dirt as well as appeared on the soundtrack to the movie Singles. Guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell wrote the song about the late Mother Love Bone lead singer, Andrew Wood.

Here is what Jerry said about the song, “I was thinking a lot about Andrew Wood at the time. We always had a great time when we did hang out, much like Chris Cornell and I do. There was never really a serious moment or conversation, it was all fun. Andy was a hilarious guy, full of life and it was really sad to lose him. But I always hate people who judge the decisions others make. So it was also directed towards people who pass judgments.”
