Alice in Chains – Would?

Posted in 1992 Songs, Alice in Chains, Alternative Rock, Grunge Rock, Hard Rock on December 3, 2008 by pelicancup

Would? was a 1992 single by Alice in Chains. It was on their ’92 album Dirt as well as appeared on the soundtrack to the movie Singles. Guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell wrote the song about the late Mother Love Bone lead singer, Andrew Wood.

Here is what Jerry said about the song, “I was thinking a lot about Andrew Wood at the time. We always had a great time when we did hang out, much like Chris Cornell and I do. There was never really a serious moment or conversation, it was all fun. Andy was a hilarious guy, full of life and it was really sad to lose him. But I always hate people who judge the decisions others make. So it was also directed towards people who pass judgments.”

Pearl Jam – Given To Fly (Live)

Posted in #1 Mainstream Rock Charts, 1998 Songs, Grunge Rock, Hard Rock, Pearl Jam on October 8, 2008 by pelicancup

Given To Fly was a #1 hit for six weeks on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts for Pearl Jam in 1998. It also went to #3 on the Billboard Modern Rock charts and #21 on the Hot 100 charts. This is a cool video of the band performing the song live at a concert in St. Louis. Eddie is enchanted by a girl who is on stage signing everything he sings. Enjoy!

Live – Lightning Crashes

Posted in #1 Mainstream Rock Charts, #1 Modern Rock Charts, 1995 Songs, Alternative Rock, Grunge Rock, Hard Rock, Live on June 3, 2008 by pelicancup

Lightning Crashes is Live’s biggest hit of their career so far. Back in 1995, it was #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts for ten weeks and the Modern Rock charts for nine weeks. It was the third single released from their 8x-Platinum Throwing Copper album. Most of Live’s recent albums have moved more towards the adult contemporary audience rather than the mainstream rock audience.

Unfortunately for them, it’s showing in their CD sales. Their last album, 2006’s Songs from Black Mountain, has only sold 90,000 copies so far. The lead single from the CD, The River, was a good song, but it was shunned by the rock charts. Enjoy!

Soul Asylum – Runaway Train

Posted in 1993 Songs, Alternative Rock, Grunge Rock, Pop Rock, Soul Asylum on January 26, 2008 by pelicancup

Runaway Train was Soul Asylum’s biggest hit. It was a top five hit on both the Billboard Hot 100 charts (#5) and the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts (#3) in 1993. My problem with this song was that radio played it so much, that to this day, it’s hard for me to listen to the whole song without getting tired of it. I loved it when it first came out, and it’s still a good song, but it’s a perfect example of radio killing a song. Enjoy!

Nirvana’s fourth single from their debut album Nevermind was called In Bloom. They actually shot a video for the song back in 1990 before the album was released, and that’s the first version below. The second video was their official video released for the song. It won the “Best Alternative Video” award at the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards. Enjoy!
